As by tradition, I'm going to pick one track for the summer of 2006.
Last year, we had all kinds of anthems, cheesy floorfillers and instant classics. This summer, well, not so lucky.
But one song stands out: DJ Shadow's "This Time".
As usual, Shadow is the king of diggin': 'This Time (I'm Gonna Try It My Way)' employs an inspiring sampled vocal lifted from a 40-year old reel discovered in a disused studio."
The track has a timeless feel (partially explained by the anecdote above) and a positive vibe, even if you've missed the soul train for good, just like me.

Funny aside: my "summer" big one wasn't actually released until mid September. Funny how things go.

It's Lou speaking, it's a regular fella, and his days are dwindling down to a precious few. As always with Lou, the sublime and the gutter meet and poetry and the mundane clash. A forgotten classic.

There is a town in North Ontario... Nick Cave covered Neil Young's Helpless in another obscure tribute album (before reprinting the song in his B-Sides and Rarities collection). Whatever Nick sings, it becomes Nick, check out Kicking Against The Pricks. DJ Shadow writes it as an instrumental (and it appears as such in UNKLE's first album). But then, after much insisting from James Lavelle, former Roses' singer Ian Brown adds, quite reluctantly, lyrics to the music, before adding his unique voice. The result, it's like visiting another world. And when Ian first listened to the song, he was actually visiting another world, Manchester's Strangeways prison.

The Light 3000. The Smiths for the space age, courtesy of the talented Schneider TM. Machines sing Moz's anthem: "And if a ten ton truck kills the both of us/to to die by your side/the pleasure, the privilege's mine". Apart from the genius cover, it's about not having a home anymore.
