I am rendering up some sample movies at the moment in order to launch a little fan site forum thing. I am rendering at 3500 bitrate, 720x576, using DivX 6.6 1080HD Codec in insane quality (yep, I know that 1080p is resolutions over 1080 height, but this is not an x.264 codec). Results are nice. Audio I am just firing out using mp3 320kbp at 48khz. I did want to use AC3, but most people would not hear it as AC3 codecs are not installed by default.

Dear Members,

as many of you have been requesting for a long time to improve the video quality on our sites, we have started to do so all over the 21sextury network.

The first site where the new episodes will be updated in the new formats is PixandVideo.com, starting on June 19th.

We've replaced AVI videos with a much better quality MP4 format (see details below) which can be played on QuickTime Player on most computers, or with the built in Media Player on Windows Vista.

We've kept the WMV format for our streaming media but we've improved the quality substantially (see details below).

If you have problems playing the new formats, please read on:

- You can play the new MP4 format with the QuickTime Player (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ ). If you don't have the player installed or don't want to use it, you can use an alternative video player called VLC player (VideoLAN - VLC Media Player - http://www.videolan.org) which is a free software. You can install it on most operating systems, just download it here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

- If you don't like the QuickTime Player or the VLC player, then our new, improved WMV's are there for you. View them online on download them to your computer. The choice is yours. Click on the 'Watch (Broadband)' link beside each video thumb on the set pages and you'll find a download link at the bottom of the opening window. The improved quality WMV videos will provide you with a far better viewing experience than the old AVI format videos (see details below).

IMHO, for a stream thats still very low. Average stream rate on most VOD or streaming sites (even youtube) would be minimum 384kbs reaching up to 2,000kbs on some decent sites. Codec is fine and nice to see advanced wma also (i.e. 9.1) but mono.. bleh. I am assuming this is for dial up people!!!

Not bad, but I would regard that as streaming profile for broadband. Interesting terminology though giving a fixed bitrate of 1200kbs and then contradicting saying "Unconstrained VBR (VBR is variable bit rate). What is it, fixed or variable and is it 1200kbs or unconstrained.

Now this one is interesting and another strange contradiction in terms. Okay, MP4 is not a new format and most people know it as Xvid or DivX (although DivX is branded MP4). Then it says Apple H264 codec which is infact a HD codec. Blueray uses a very high bitrate H264 codec for example (with way higher res). Now, the 720x540 is not a true HD standard, so is this HD (i.e. H.264) or MP4. I'll need to join to download one of these and do a gspot analysis to find out what is really going on. CBR for the record is Constant Bit Rate meaning that it will always be 1600kbs regardless of how fast the action is. Higher action generally uses a higher bitrate to offset blurring and distortion. DVD for example is usually an MPEG2 VBR at 6,000 to 9,000kbs.

All now depends on what cameras they are using and what original quality they get to determine what they can produce. I do hope they consider re-encoding their back catalog with these new standards.

All in all though, they still have no where near matched what DDF is churning out. DDF are still holding best quality atm.
