You don't need a 'high end' pc or anything - you just need a video card that supports video decoding acceleration, something like the nvidia gts210. That's only like 35€ here.

for wmvhd u need good performance cpu too... to play high bitrate h264 u need to configure codecs players...video accelerator...and u need good cpu !!! but if u buy E7400 u dont need to buy gts 210...

Tried that. Looks at minimum like I'll have to invest in a higher-end video card. that won't be until after Christmas. But I've got plenty of time -- this site won't be up for a couple of years.
