You need to go back and check again your sources.
There´s no geological border between Europe and Russia.
They´re on the same continent: Eurasia
Therefore splitting Russia in a European and Asian part is biased anyway.

It was part of the Soviet Union and may yet be in the EU.

Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were part of the Soviet Union but are now in Europe and also the EU.
