I don't know about the multilayering thing...although it does sound like it could be interesting.
I have always gotten a good kick out of the dual layering type of thing/look....when it is done right with a good model.
It usually works so well that it surprises me that it isn't done more often in certain types of scenes. (..costs?..lack of knowledge and/or interest?)
It can create a really great and interesting look.
