The person who shot the cover really knows how to make his/her job. I thought the 80's were over.

there are so many things wrong in that cover that it should be used to teach students what not to do.
the designer is prob' couch hopping her career or at least, we wish her that, because talent-wise, it's doomed

Hmm, absolutely yes, practically not really - if I look around at average mag covers, many of them are worse than this.
There are really good, inventional designers around but I dont see their work in the common, good selling mags, covers, papers, catalogues, print materials.

Otherwise I see them doing many times for a lot less money or non-profit areas, alternative culture, book/cd/DVD covers/ilustrations, modern shop decorations, unconventional corporate identities, advert copywriters etc...
For example last year we received 5th place for the best corporate in-house magazine category in famous corporate prints competition in Czech (several tens of companies in each category). BUT in the first 3 places all over the categories, there are like only 3 same designer studios total behind that. BTW we are doing it by ourselves.
